Traditional Glasses Are Not Enough for Nearsighted Kids

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is about more than your kid needing glasses to see the board at school. It’s a common vision issue that typically worsens in your child’s school years and can have long-term impacts on their eye health.

Myopia control works to slow down the worsening of your child’s vision, keeping their prescription lower and reducing the risks of serious complications like retinal detachment, glaucoma, or early cataracts later in life.

Our myopia control strategies are tailored to your child’s needs. We can prescribe special glasses lenses, orthokeratology overnight contacts, soft contacts, or medication to slow the progression of their myopia.

Schedule your child’s next eye exam with us today, and together we’ll take the first step toward a brighter, clearer future for them.

Why Does Myopia Control Matter?

For a long time, parents and eye doctors alike believed that being nearsighted could be corrected with glasses or contacts and nothing else needed to be done. Now, we understand that myopia can lead to vision complications later in life.

With children and teens spending increasingly less time outdoors and more time using screens, myopia is becoming more common, progressing faster, and hitting kids at younger ages.

By choosing myopia control for your nearsighted child, you’re taking an important step in protecting their vision long-term.

Our Approach to Myopia Control

We offer a highly personalized process to help manage myopia progression in your child. We have an array of options so we can work with what makes the most sense for your family and your child’s lifestyle.

Our myopia control methods include specialized eyeglasses, soft contacts, overnight contacts, and medicated eye drops. Let’s look at how each of these strategies works.

Often recommended for children 12 and younger, MyoCare lenses use alternating ring-like zones of focus and defocus to help manage myopia progression while also helping provide clear sight for all viewing angles.

Essilor Stellest lenses use over 1,000 invisible “lenslets” to correct your child’s vision while also using a myopic defocus technique to manage your child’s myopia progression. They have been shown to reduce myopia progression by up to 67% on average.

Ortho-k, or orthokeratology, are contact lenses your child wears overnight. While your child is sleeping, the lenses gently and temporarily reshape the surface of their eye. In the morning, the lenses can be removed, and your child can enjoy clear vision and the benefits of myopia control.

Ortho-k can be an excellent option for active kids because they don’t need to wear glasses or contacts during the day.

MiSight lenses are daily disposable soft contact lenses designed specifically for nearsighted kids. These lenses not only correct your child’s vision but also use a special technology to create a myopic defocus, helping to manage the progression of myopia.

Clinical studies have shown that MiSight lenses can reduce myopia progression by up to 59% on average. They’re a comfortable, easy-to-use option for kids who prefer contact lenses.

Atropine eye drops can help slow the progression of myopia by relaxing the focusing muscles in your child’s eyes.

Combining atropine drops with other methods, such as glasses, contact lenses, or orthokeratology, can provide an enhanced level of myopia control and protection against long-term complications. We may recommend combination treatments to address your child’s unique needs.

Request Your Child’s Eye Exam Today

We know you want the best for your child. Bringing them in for annual eye exams can set them up for success by allowing us the opportunity to identify vision issues as early as possible. It’s often difficult for kids to verbalize a vision problem—they may not even realize they see the world differently from others.

In their eye exam, we can quickly identify if they’re nearsighted and start explaining the available options.
