Will LASIK Work for You? Find Out with a LASIK Consultation
If you have often imagined what it feels like to wake up and not reach for your glasses, it’s time to talk to your optometrist about having laser eye surgery.
LASIK and other laser refractive surgeries are suitable for many people with healthy eyes who currently wear glasses or contacts. They’re a very common, safe, and effective way to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. However, due to a few limitations, LASIK is not the perfect solution for everybody.
When you’re ready to ditch your glasses and discard your contacts, book a consultation at Visionary Eye Centre to learn if you’re a good candidate for laser eye surgery.

Who Can Get LASIK?

LASIK is often an excellent option for people with common vision prescriptions, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Good candidates for LASIK typically need to meet the following criteria:
- At least 18 years old
- A stable prescription for at least a year
- A prescription between +6.00 D of farsightedness, -12 D of nearsightedness, and 6.00 D of astigmatism
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding (hormonal changes can temporarily affect vision)
- Healthy eyes (no severe dry eye or corneal conditions)
If you meet these criteria, LASIK could be a solution for clearer, sharper vision. In a LASIK consultation, we can assess your candidacy and help you get started.

Co-Managing Your LASIK Surgery
When you come in for your initial consultation at Visionary Eye Centre, we will perform a comprehensive eye exam. It’s important that you have healthy eyes for this procedure, but the evaluation goes far deeper than that.
Your optometrist assesses your refraction, pupil size, and your tear quality. Using a corneal topographer, we will map out a 3D image of your corneas, particularly the shape and thickness. Adding all this information to your medical history allows us to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK.
If you’re a candidate for LASIK and choose to proceed with surgery, we can provide personalized care before and after your LASIK surgery. We’ll happily refer you to trusted ophthalmologists in the area. We take pride in our recommendations, knowing that you’ll receive excellent treatment.

How Laser Eye Surgery Works
LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is the most common refractive eye surgery procedure in use today. It is very similar to other refractive surgeries in that it relies on lasers to change the shape of your cornea. This can correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, or even astigmatism.
The procedure typically goes like this:
- Eye drops are used to numb your eyes. This keeps the procedure painless and keeps you as comfortable as possible.
- The surgeon uses a laser to create a corneal flap that is folded back. A laser is used to pulse light, which reshapes your cornea to exacting standards. This portion of the procedure takes about 5 minutes.
- After the surgery, you will need a ride home. You may experience temporary discomfort and blurry or hazy vision, but this should resolve itself overnight.
