What to Know About Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, clear layer covering the white part of the eye. It can cause redness, irritation, and discomfort, but understanding the type of conjunctivitis is key to managing it effectively.
If you or your child experiences symptoms of conjunctivitis, it’s important to act quickly, especially if you suspect viral or bacterial pink eye. Prompt care can help relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and reduce the risk of spreading it to others.
Contact our office immediately for an eye exam and guidance on the next steps. We’re here to help protect your eyes and your peace of mind.
Often caused by the same viruses responsible for colds, viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and can spread through direct or indirect contact with an infected person. Symptoms may include watery eyes, redness, and sensitivity to light.
Viral conjunctivitis is the most common type, and while antibiotics won’t necessarily speed up recovery from it, we can offer other solutions to ease the discomfort.
To prevent the spread of contagious pink eye at home, encourage frequent handwashing, avoid sharing towels, pillows, or personal items, and make sure children avoid touching their eyes. Cleaning commonly used surfaces regularly can also help minimize the risk of infection.
Bacterial conjunctivitis results from a bacterial infection and is also contagious. It often produces thick yellow or green discharge and can cause the eyelids to stick together, especially in the morning.
Antibiotics may help in cases of bacterial conjunctivitis, but they can also resolve on their own.
To help prevent pink eye from spreading throughout your home, encourage thorough handwashing, avoid sharing towels, blankets and pillows, and remind kids not to touch their eyes.
Caused by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander, this type of conjunctivitis is not contagious. It typically presents with intense itching, tearing, and redness in both eyes.
Allergies can be serious, so we encourage you to come in to assess the cause of your symptoms.
Chemical conjunctivitis occurs when the eyes come into contact with irritating substances such as smoke, chlorine, cleaning products, or other harsh chemicals. This type is not contagious but can cause significant discomfort and potential damage if not treated promptly.
