Glaucoma can affect anyone but there are a few factors that can increase your risk. You are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma if you are:
The best way to prevent glaucoma is to have your eyes checked annually.
Glaucoma is often referred to as the silent thief of sight because it presents asymptomatically. The cause of glaucoma is high intraocular pressure (IOP) causing damage to your optic nerve. This damage is painless and the effects are initially limited to your peripheral vision. Optometrists can easily test your IOP and take images of your optic nerve to discover any early warning signs of this disease.
Unfortunately, the changes in your eyesight from glaucoma are irreversible. However, we have an arsenal of treatments that can help to slow the progression and vision loss due to glaucoma. Eye pressure can be reduced with medicated eye drops. Surgical options can also be explored.
A history of a severe eye injury or ocular inflammation can make a difference in the future of your vision. If you have experienced either of these in your life, even at a young age, it is important to tell your optometrist. After discussing the incident with you, we may recommend that you are tested for glaucoma at each annual visit.
Come visit our beautiful optometry clinic located in the heart of Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton. We are easily accessible off of Bethel Drive, north of Baseline Road. Parking is located at the front of the Synergy Wellness Centre for $2, we ask that you kindly provide your plate number during your appointment, and we'll cover the parking fee.
